Ganesh Chaturthi at Shree Siddhivinayak temple



Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival for the Hindu people to celebrate the birth of lord ganesh. It is also known as Vinayak Chaturthi. It is celebrated on a huge scale at Shree Siddhivinayak temple. It starts on the fourth day of the 6thlunar month Bhadrapada. There are a couple of methods of calculating a lunar month. The first one is calculating from Purnima to Purnimawith the other being calculating from Amavasya to Amavasya. According to the Gregorian calendar, it generally falls in the month of August or September. It is a ten-day celebration.

People establish a clay-idol of lord Ganesh in their residences or in public pandals. The worship starts with the chanting of Vedic hymns such as Ganapati Upanishad. Devotees celebrate this day by fasting and having of Prasadfollowing the worship. The Prasad is distributed to the community from Shri Siddhivinayak mandirThe public pandals also distributes Prasad. Modaka is the special Prasad for this. It is believed that modaka is the most favorite food of lord ganesh. On the 10th day,the idol is carried by the public with a big procession followed by its immersion in any water-body. The clay idol then gets dissolved in the water. According to Hindu Purana,this depicts the return of Lord Ganesh to the Kailas Parbat.



According to the medieval Purana, Lord Ganesh is the deity of prosperity, good beginnings, and remover of hindrances. In Rig-Veda, we can find the earliest mention of Ganapati or Ganesh.This festival is especially celebrated in the western states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh. But some other states from the south also celebrates this festival. It is believed that Chatrapati was responsible for commencing this festival publicly followingthe Mughal-Maratha warfare at Pune during his era (1630-1680).During the British rule, it became a private family festival and not just a public celebration. The freedom fighter and the social reformer Lokmanya Tilak revived its wide celebration in Maharashtra. Sidhhivinayak temple is one of the best temples of Lord Ganesh.
