The Gangotri Temple is located on the banks of the Bhagirathi. This temple is dedicated to the goddess Ganga. This temple is located at a height of 3180 meters. the original Gangotri Temple was made by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century and later rebuilt by the jaipur maharaja. The Gangotri Temple is an exquiste 20 feet high structure made of white granite. Every year people from all around the world visit this shrine between may and Oct. A number of ashrams and dharamshalas are located on the opposite side. it’s believed that the rock or Bhagirath Shila on that the Raja Bhagirath used to worship Shiva is located near the temple. The Gaurikund falls, one of the most beautiful in the Himalaya, the rocks resembling big stone chip tools, is nearby.

The origin of the holy stream is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri ice mass, and is a nineteen kilometer trek from Gangotri.
As per Hindu puranas history the goddess Ganga took the form of a stream to absolve the sins of King Bhagiratha’s predecessors, following his severe penance of many centuries.
